Set-up corner
Let's face it, car set-up can be pretty
frustrating at times. Springs, shock oil, pistons, roll
bars, camber, caster, squat, kick-up, ride heights, roll
centres, toe, droop, wheel base and diff settings are
just some of the bewildering set-up choices you have on
any of the modern 1/10th scale touring cars these days.

That's why
i've added this section which contains set-up sheets
from my Xray FK05 and some from my old Associated
TC3. I don't claim to be a set-up wizard but if you
think my car looks okay you're more than welcome to
try my settings :-) As well as those I have also added
a number of links to websites containing extermely
detailed info on car set-up theory (for you tech-heads
out there) and more links to set-up collections and
interactive sites you can use to calculate gearing,
rollout, speed etc |
Ross' Xray on a tweak gague,
that's where the bubble should be! |
I hope this proves of at least some use
to you. During my admittedly limited years of racing i've
come to realise and understand that firstly it's most
important to maintain and keep your car in top condition,
is everything free, does the suspension drop under its
own weight, did that whack against the wall last week
give you an extra 2 degrees of camber? ;-) If everything
is functioning as it should even the standard set-up you'll
find in your cars instruction book should work fairly
well, then it's just a case of adapting it to your own
driving style and track, best of luck :-)

Here are links to some websites I think are very
useful regarding car set-up:
Gearchart
Creator
Simply enter your car, spur and pinion and this
clever little tool will generate you a gear chart. Always a useful thing to
have with you at the track. Enter in a few more details and you can even find
out your rollout and speed!
Set-ups
On the same site as the gearchart creator you'll
find hundreds of set-ups, just enter in your car at the top and you'll be shown
a whole list of available set-ups. You can also search for set-ups by particular
well known drivers or by track condition, surface etc
Blank
set-up sheets
So, you've finally got your car handling well?
Going round the track as if it's on rails or being driven by a world champion?
Then download one of these blank set-up sheets and write it down before you
go and mess it up! ;-)
An
extremely technical look at RC Cars
This is a very complex but comprehensive look at
all aspects of set-up. Personally I think it's too much but if you're into this
sort of thing you'll be in heaven ;-) Myself, I prefer to go for the XXX Main
Chassis set-up guide (see below)
XXX
Main Touring Car Set-up book
This excellent book (written by Martin Crisp)
covers just about every set-up adjustment you can make to an RC Car. Each
area of the cars set-up is explained in simple terms and various handling
scenarios are used to explain what changes you should make to solve particular
handling problems. I think it's indispensable, all you need to know is
that if you look in most 'A' Finalists pit boxes you'll see a copy of
this book, enough said. Available from all good model shops and some rubbish
ones as well ;-) |

|
That's about it for this section, i'll keep adding
my own personal set-ups as and when I think I get a good one. If you know of
any good reference websites please let me know and i'll add them here,
Oh, one last thing..........one adjustment at a
time!
